Built by breeders
HerdAble started in a pasture in Indiana. When your wife needs something, you act. After two decades of wrangling livestock, doing health tests, herd maintenance, keeping animal records, farm expenses, and tracking sales on paper, mine had had enough.
She was tired of keeping records like every breeder we know. They keep records the way records have always been kept: a notebook in a coat pocket, a spreadsheet at the kitchen table, a stack of registration certificates in a drawer, and a lot in their head.
So we built a tool. Not a general-purpose farm program with various species bolted on, but the thing that is actually needed standing in the field. One record per animal, the health log and the pedigree and the registration papers in the same place, working in the field when the signal drops, and shared with whoever is doing chores that day, on a plan with more than one member.
We have used HerdAble on a real herd and a real farm from the first week. When something was wrong, we improved it. That is still how HerdAble gets built. We are the first users of everything, on a working herd, in real-life scenarios.
Features exist because someone on our farm needed them on a Tuesday, and they stay because they held up on the Wednesday.
What we believe
Your records are yours. You can read everything you have entered on every plan, including after you cancel. Your sales, expense and mileage records export as a spreadsheet today, and exporting the rest is being built.
The pasture is the workplace. If it does not work with gloves on, in the sun, one-handed, with no bars of signal, it does not work.
A farm is more than one person. A spouse, a partner, a kid doing 4-H, a hired hand: the people who do the work should be able to see and add to the record.
Small operations deserve real software. Big enough that the notebook is no longer efficient, small enough that enterprise systems make no sense. That is us, and that is who we build for.
Where we are
HerdAble Inc. is a small Indiana company. The app runs in your browser today, with Android and iPhone apps coming. Goats are where we started; cattle, sheep, dogs, pigs, horses and poultry are in the app now, with more species on the way.
Help us build it
HerdAble gets better the same way it started: someone needed something and said so. If you keep animals and keep records, we want to hear what works for you, what gets in your way, and what you still do on paper because nothing else fits. Every note goes to the people who build it, and the good ones turn into features that other farms benefit from too.
